Our area has experienced some record cold temperatures this month. Though you may be taking extra steps to keep yourself warm, SERVPRO of Lansdale, Warminster, Blue Bell and Abington Jenkintown wants to remind you to keep your home safe as well.

The Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety reports that pipes generally don't burst from simply freezing - it is actually the buildup of pressure between the frozen water blockage and the closed faucet that causes the pipe to burst.

1) Let a faucet slowly drip during extreme cold weather (under 20 degrees F) to provide pressure relief on the pipe.  If hot and cold water lines serve a fixture, make sure that both lines are contributing to the drip.

2) If you are planning to travel out of town, take the extra precaution of draining your water system.  To do this, shut off the main water valve and then turn on all fixtures until water stops flowing.  If there is no water in the lines, they can't freeze or burst.
